Open Enrollment through Virginia’s Insurance Marketplace opens November 1 each year, allowing individuals and families to enroll in or change healthcare insurance plans for the next calendar year. The Marketplace can be a useful option for those who:
- do not receive affordable health insurance options through their employer,
- do not have any health insurance (uninsured), or
- are self-employed.
The Marketplace will direct the application of anyone who is potentially eligible for Medicaid to the local social services office for processing. Likewise, if someone applies for Medicaid but is not eligible, the application is shared with the Marketplace to find a suitable, affordable insurance plan.
The Public Assistance and Employment Services (PAES) division in DFS processes Medicaid applications, as well as applications for other benefits.
What happens if my application is redirected?
If your health insurance application is referred to PAES, let us determine if you are eligible for Medicaid – don’t withdraw your application because you don’t think you’ll qualify. Even if it’s determined you don’t qualify for Medicaid benefits, you may qualify for a discounted rate through the Insurance Marketplace after your Medicaid application is denied.
The bottom line: If you apply for health insurance through Virginia’s Marketplace, your application could be referred to us to determine your Medicaid eligibility. If you are eligible for Medicaid – great! You have access to low-cost healthcare.
If you are not eligible for Medicaid, you may qualify for a discounted rate through Virginia’s Marketplace, but only if we deny your application first.
At the end of the day, we work towards everyone having access to affordable health care to build thriving families and communities. To keep learning about health care coverage options, check out the following resources:
