Meet Kristen!
I've been with the county for almost 11 years and have been in my current position with the Northern Virginia Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program for over 6 years.
In my job, I advocate for residents in nursing and assisted living facilities to make sure they receive quality care. I conduct site visits and respond to calls that come in through our intake line. I also consult with providers and address concerns that consumers may have about their long-term care provider. Additionally, I give presentations to residents, facility staff, and community members on various topics, including residents’ rights, which is the cornerstone of our program.
I received my bachelor’s degree from the University of Virginia in Psychology and Sociology. Then, I earned my master’s of social work degree from George Mason University. Before working for Fairfax County in 2014, I worked as an in-home counselor and as a case manager with a domestic violence non-profit. I started with the county as an Adult Protective Services worker and was there for a little over four years before transitioning to the Ombudsman Program.
The most rewarding aspect of my work is hearing from consumers that their experience has improved because of my advocacy. It feels great to empower individuals and connect them with the right resources and contacts so they can effectively address their concerns.
I decided to work for the Department of Family Services (DFS) after interning with Fairfax County during my graduate school program. I enjoyed coming to work because it was a positive, supportive environment with a lot of resources for county residents. I think it is a good place to work long-term for many reasons, including the benefits and great work-life balance.
In my free time, I enjoy spending time with family and friends, as well as my husband and two cats, Eevee and Martin. I also love being outside, especially walking or hiking. Lastly, I enjoy putting together Lego sets or 3D printing, including printing 3D earrings.
A fun fact about me: My lifelong goal is to visit every U.S. National Park.
