Medicaid Changes Coming Soon

Translate this page into a different language.

(Posted 2026 September)

Changes required by federal law are coming soon to Medicaid, starting October 1, 2026.

To qualify for full Medicaid benefits after October 1, 2026, adults will need to be a U.S. citizen, a Lawful Permanent Resident, Cuban or Haitian Entrant, or a Compact of Free Association migrant. Medicaid rules for children and pregnant members are not changing.

Losing health insurance can create challenges in accessing and managing care. This can be especially true for survivors of domestic violence, who often access Medicaid to have health care independent of the person who caused harm. Medicaid provides economic security for a survivor to be able to leave an abusive relationship while maintaining access to physical or emotional health care for themselves and their children after an abusive relationship or as a result of one.

Fortunately, there are community clinics and other services available to help people stay healthy, regardless of immigration status. Learn about low-cost or free health care options in Fairfax County.

On January 1, 2027, additional changes go into effect for some adults by adding:

  • A new Medicaid work requirement for some individuals to keep their coverage
  • More frequent eligibility renewals every 6 months instead of 12 months

These changes only apply to adults with Medicaid Expansion (adults ages 19–64 with incomes up to138% of the Federal Poverty Level).

Many exemptions apply to the new work requirement, including for individuals who are pregnant or postpartum, have a serious medical or mental health condition, substance use disorder, or disability, are parents, guardians, or caregivers of a child under 14 or individual with a disability, and more. A complete list is available at dmas.virginia.gov.

Work requirements can be met by working, volunteering, or participating in work training or education for at least 80 hours a month, enrolling as a student at least half-time, or having an income of at least $580/month.

Department of Family Services is committed to helping eligible people stay covered.

Medicaid members should ensure their contact information is up to date and keep an eye out for important notifications from Virginia Medicaid. Make changes online at commonhelp.virginia.gov or by calling Cover Virginia at 1-855-242-8282 (TTY: 1-888-221-1590).
