Are You Considering Retirement?
Fairfax County Government employees, who are enrolled in benefits and qualify for retirement may elect to continue participation in the medical, vision, dental, and life insurance benefits. As you approach retirement, it is the employee's responsibility to notify the Retirement Systems, the Benefits Division in the Department of Human Resources, their agency, and their supervisor about their decision.
Retirement is considered a qualifying event and may allow you to make certain changes in your benefit enrollments. To maintain benefit enrollments or to update your enrollments as you approach retirement, you must complete a New Retiree Benefits form and submit it the Benefits Division within 30 calendar days of your retirement.

The County requires retirees to maintain continuous coverage in Fairfax County Government Health (Medical, Prescription, and Vision), Dental, and/or Life plans. After retirement, if you lose any of these coverages, for any reason, there is no opportunity to re-elect that coverage at a later date and any break in medical coverage with Fairfax County Government will mean loss of your Retiree Subsidy.
The County allows coverage to be transferred from the active Fairfax County Government employee group to the retiree group and vice versa. However, transfers to and from the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) groups are not allowed for purposes of retaining continuous coverage, as FCPS is a separate employer.
