What Happens to My Benefits - Separating or Reducing Hours

Separation from Employment

If you are enrolled in a Fairfax County Government sponsored benefit at the time you separate from your active employment, your current coverages will end on the last day of the month in which you terminate.

Health plan participants who terminate employment may continue their coverage in the Fairfax County group under COBRA for up to 18 months. After your separation has been processed by your Agency staff, you will automatically receive an official notice explaining how to continue coverage under COBRA. You may also request this information from HR Central by calling (703) 324-3311. Your COBRA election form and payments should be sent to the Benefits Division, Department of Human Resources, 12000 Government Center Parkway, Suite 270, Fairfax, VA 22035.

Reduction in Hours Resulting in a change in Benefits Eligibility Status

If you experience a change of status in a benefits eligible position, your benefits will continue but note if you work less than 30 hours per week, your premiums could increase. When planning a reduction in your current hours, note that benefit premiums are determined by your status in FOCUS, not specifically to how many hours you work in each week.

For those who move to a non-benefits eligible position, due to ACA regulations, your coverage will not end at the end of the month you experience the reduction. Health coverage will continue until the end of the calendar you will be charged the part-time premium beginning the first of the month following their status change.

Note: A reduction in hours is a mid-year mid-year qualifying event. Employees may elect to cancel their coverage by contacting the Benefits Division and submitting the required form within 30-calendar days of their status change. Action is required to terminate benefits before the end of the calendar year. You may also have the option of continuing this coverage under COBRA.
