Environmental Organizations

Mason District and Fairfax County are rich with non-profit and volunteer organizations and groups dedicated to our county and regions natural resources. With so many issue areas, the number of groups and their missions can be overwhelming -- especially to those new to the area or to conservation efforts.

This page is a simple guide to help familiarize constituents like you with the groups, their logos, and their mission. It is also to express our gratitude and help support the many individuals who dedicate their time to supporting the environment we all enjoy!

The Park Authority enriches the quality of life for all members of the community through an enduring park system that provides a healthy environment, preserves natural and cultural heritage, offers inspiring recreational experiences, and promotes healthy lifestyles.

Responsible for administering laws and regulations related to air quality, water quality, water supply, renewable energy and land protection, the Department of Environmental Quality is the primary environmental permitting agency in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Through the work more than 800 employees at six regional offices across the state and the Central Office in Richmond, DEQ issues permits, conducts monitoring and inspections, and enforces the law.

Founded in 1945 by citizens concerned about conserving natural resources, the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District is now one of 47 conservation districts in Virginia and approximately 3,000 nationwide. They develop comprehensive programs and plans to conserve soil resources control and prevent soil erosion, prevent floods and conserve, develop, utilize and dispose of water.

Earth Sangha’s mission is to conserve, propagate, and restore native plants and their habitats, encourage people of all backgrounds to become better stewards of the planet, and practice good stewardship of our planet in a secular, scientific, and socially-informed manner. We operate a volunteer-based program to propagate local native plants, restore native plant communities, and control invasive alien plants.

Fairfax County Master Gardeners has its roots in the National Capital Area Federation of Garden Clubs. Although Plant Clinics remain the major focus and core of the FCMGA, volunteers support our other programs and continue to carry out its historical mission of providing the community with research-based education and advice on horticultural and environmental best practices.

The Fairfax Master Naturalist chapter of the Virginia Master Naturalist Program is an all-volunteer organization of trained and certified members who serve as officers and administer the program at the local level. They coordinate needs and projects with volunteers whom they develop by offering knowledge and skills to enable them to provide education, outreach, and service for the beneficial management of natural resources and natural areas in the Fairfax County area.

Partnerships for Regional Invasive Species Management are collaborative efforts to control invasive species within a geographic area. Their work and vision is toward a Fairfax County with a tree canopy that is free from the threat of invasive vines, parks whose natural beauty is preserved for all to enjoy, and natural areas that thrive as functioning ecosystems.

Fairfax Tree Stewards works to preserve, plant, and maintain trees in Fairfax County; educate the public on the value and benefits of trees; teach and encourage the public to take an active role in caring for trees; and train volunteers to carry out their work.

Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions (FACS) unites people of faith, and friends who share our values, to develop local solutions to the climate crisis, to enable congregations to do good works that protect all living things, and to empower congregations to become champions of change.

Friends of Holmes Run, originally founded in 2013, brings Fairfax County, Falls Church and City of Alexandria residents together with environmental advocates over shared concerns about the accelerating impact of land use changes, urbanization and climate change on Holmes Run and related tributaries and lakes in the Cameron Run watershed.

Nature Forward is committed to their mission to inspire people across the region to appreciate, understand and protect their natural environment. Their vision is to create a larger and more diverse community of people who treasure the natural world and work to preserve it.

The mission of the Norther Virginia Bird Alliance is to engage all northern Virginia communities in enjoying, conserving, and restoring nature for the benefit of birds, other wildlife, and people. They advance their mission through educational programs, citizen science, conservation initiatives, and advocacy initiatives and envision a world where people, wildlife, and their habitats thrive.

The Northern Virginia Conservation Trust preserves urban, suburban, and rural lands and waters for habitat, recreation, and healthy communities. They are committed to fortifying our natural resources against the impact of changing land use and the climate crisis by guaranteeing that the lands and waters that make Northern Virginia exceptional are preserved for all time.

Plant NOVA Natives is the all-volunteer, joint marketing campaign of a grand coalition of non-profit, governmental, and private groups, all working to reverse the decline of native plants and wildlife in Northern Virginia. Our strategy is to encourage residents as well as public and commercial entities to install native plants as the first step toward creating wildlife habitat and functioning ecosystems on their own properties. All are welcome to participate in this collective action movement!

Wildlife Rescue League is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing care for sick, injured and orphaned wildlife with the intent of releasing them back into their native habitat. Their licensed rehabilitators, located throughout Northern Virginia and surrounding areas, work with a network of volunteers, wildlife centers, animal shelters, humane societies, nature centers and veterinary hospitals to provide life-saving work for wildlife in need.
