Public Safety

Safety is a key concern for virtually everyone who lives, works, or visits our county. With a diverse population of 1.2 million, this can be a challenging task and is the responsibility of everyone to maintain.

Our Public Safety departments work with each other and other departments to ensure that safety for everyone. We appreciate the every day efforts of our Department of Public Safety Communications team, our Fire & Rescue professionals and volunteers, the Fairfax County Police Department, the Fairfax County Sheriff's Office, and the Fairfax County Department of Animal Services. Each group is a critical part of making Fairfax County the safest jurisdiction of its size in the country.

With two shelters in Fairfax and Lorton, they routinely find homes for dozens of animals per day, Animal Services is definitely a source for some of the cutest content in the entire county. It should be noted that Animal Services work also includes the important job of Animal Control and enforcement through hard-working and well-trained Animal Safety Officers.

These officers and other Animal Services staff ensure that the county provides humane, evidence‑based animal care to our animal residents. We also need to recognize the efforts of more than 600 volunteers and who give up their time to ensure that animals in our county receive the best treatment possible.

If you would like to volunteer, adopt, or learn more, please visit Animal Services at: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/animalservices/

Fire and Rescue Services in Fairfax County includes both the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department and the Fairfax County Volunteer Fire Department. Both include some of the best trained and most experienced individuals in the field.

Here is a map showing the various stations throughout the district and nearby:

We would also like to recognize the efforts of Fire Departments in our adjacent communities of Arlington County and the City of Alexandria who will respond to emergencies within Fairfax County when needed, as our professionals and volunteers do for their jurisdictions in kind.

Mason District is currently patrolled by four police stations: Mason, Franconia, West Springfield, and McLean. While each of these are separate commands, all are available to assist and help in case of an emergency.

Residents experiencing a life-threatening emergency should dial 9-1-1 and non-emergency requests should be directed to 703-691-2131. However, if you have a station-specific question, feel free to dial the respective station at the following numbers:

Mason District Police Station: 703-256-8035
Franconia District Police Station: 703-922-0889
West Springfield District Police Station: 703-644-7737
McLean District Police Station: 703-556-7750

The Fairfax County Sheriff is an elected position within Fairfax County and serves an important role in public safety. She and her deputies providing security for the Fairfax County Courthouse complex, operate the Adult Detention Center located adjacent to the Courthouse, and execute the civil law process on behalf of the courts.

Although their offices and postings are located outside of the district, their deputies are active throughout our community, delivering thousands of court documents per month, transporting individuals to and from the Fairfax County Courthouse, and work to uphold the principals of the Fairfax County government and it's residents.

To learn more about this important office, we encourage residents to visit the Sheriff's Office directly via their website or contact them with questions via email.

Public Safety Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer Firefighter Department

There are 12 volunteer stations in Fairfax County, all of which are looking for new members. Whether you want to be on the front lines delivering emergency medical care and fire protection or providing the administrative support required to operate a volunteer department there is a position for you!

Fairfax County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association

Community Emergency Response Team

The Community Emergency Repsonse Team (CERT) is a training and volunteer program administered through the county Fire and Rescue Department. The training prepares residents to help themselves, their families, and their neighbors in the event of a disaster in their community.  CERT members are trained to operate without outside assistance, using materials that can be found on scene or nearby. During these emergencies they will often be the best trained responders and are taught to recruit and instruct their neighbors to safely help in carrying out their duties.

This is a great way to contribute spare time and expertise to the array of needs in a safe community. Learn more here!

Auxiliary Police Officers

Chances are you've seen Auxiliary Police Officers volunteering in the community recently. They serve us by augmenting patrol officers, conduct traffic control at crash scenes, provide crime scene security, and cover officers during traffic stops. Their involvement allows our offices to be placed where they are needed most and provide a helpful and well-trained resource for residents and visitors.

The program is rigorous and definitely an opportunity to learn a lot about the law and public service. For more information, check out the link below!
