Members of the Mount Vernon community joined local leaders on Saturday, Oct. 5, to celebrate the beginning of renovations at the Original Mount Vernon High School. The county-owned facility, built in 1939 on land that was once part of George Washington’s estate, is listed as a historic landmark and has long been a recognizable part of the Mount Vernon community. Now, the county is reimagining the school, turning it into a “Human Development Center” that will provide education, entertainment and enrichment services for residents of all ages.
New Uses for Historic Space
The main goal for the renovation is to create a “Human Development Center” by providing Pathways to Opportunity through education, workforce development and life skills development programs. The finished campus will be anchored by a library, theater and gym, but will feature plenty of space for programming to include a teen and senior center and early childhood education programs. Local nonprofits will also be integrated into the center, providing additional services that meet the needs of Mount Vernon residents.
Sustainability for the Future
The project is designed to meet the Fairfax County Sustainable Development Policy. A geothermal system will be provided to achieve LEED-Gold certification and provide 25% energy efficiency. Additionally, solar panels will be provided on the flat roof areas pending approval by the Virginia Dept. of Historic Resources. The project will also include electrical vehicle charging stations. Stormwater management will be provided by Low Impact Development facilities.
A True Community Project
The community has been engaged with the OMVHS Renovation project since its beginning steps. County staff have worked hard to collect feedback from local residents and provide a center that truly meets the needs of Mount Vernon. Community meetings on OMVHS have been taking place since 2020, and many involved were on hand for the groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the success to come.
Project completion is anticipated for summer 2026, with a grand opening celebration to follow.
