More than 300 community members and local officials came together on Oct. 28, to celebrate the grand opening of the new Lorton District Police Station and Fairfax County Animal Shelter – Lorton Campus. Residents from across South County were able to tour the facility and visit with adoptable pets as they enjoyed games and refreshments well into the afternoon.
PROVIDING NEEDED SERVICES TO THE SOUTH COUNTY AREA
This facility was built by our Department of Public Works and Environmental Services to provide support for the busy residents of the southern part of Fairfax County. The new 30,000-square foot police station will allow the department to organize smaller patrol areas and decrease response times throughout the county. The county’s second animal shelter will increase access to critical services, such as behavior and training support, pet wellness services, pet supplies and more. The 23,000-square-foot shelter will also provide a more convenient location for nearby residents to adopt, foster, volunteer and participate in shelter programs.

LOCATION HIGHLIGHTS
The site also includes 20,000 square feet of outdoor space for the animal shelter, a satellite office for the Mount Vernon District supervisor, two community rooms that will be available for resident meetings and a fuel island to support fleet vehicles and associated parking. Arched covered walkways and gabled end walls were integrated into the design to compliment the Workhouse Campus aesthetics in Lorton.
The project also features a number of sustainability highlights. Our Green Building Policy for county facilities helps us use less energy and results in a smaller carbon footprint, while also addressing water use, waste, siting, indoor air quality and material sourcing. The building was designed to achieve LEED® Silver Certification and the site features bio-retention enhancement with an underground stormwater facility; tree protection measures and preservation; natural landscaping areas; infrastructure for solar panels; electric vehicle charging stations; and energy efficient systems and materials that promote indoor air quality.
PROJECT BACKGROUND
In November 2015, voters overwhelmingly approved funding for the Lorton District Police Station and Fairfax County Animal Shelter.
Mount Vernon Supervisor Dan Storck convened an eight-member steering committee to communicate with interested community members and to advocate with county staff, architects and key stakeholders during the development of the facility. The composition of the committee is representative of diverse community interests including area neighbors, HOA members, community members with law enforcement and animal shelter experience and members of the South County Federation.
