Using Data to Guide Fairfax County Forward

 

The Economic, Demographic and Statistical Research Unit within our Department of Management and Budget conducts research to support goals and initiatives. It provides economic and demographic insights through reports, interactive tools and collaborative studies and provides resources on the county’s Demographics & Data website.

The data produced is used with other publicly available data for a wide variety of county applications such as budgeting and revenue forecasting; land use, housing and infrastructure planning; capital improvement program; performance measurements; and to help senior leadership make decisions on how to use county resources.

 

Get the Data You Need Anytime

This data is all publicly available and can help residents understand how decisions are made within the county while providing valuable information that can help our local communities improve and grow. You can find infographics, studies and reports, along with other resources to help you find the data you seek. Some popular reports and tools include: 

  • Fairfax County Overview: This visualization tool provides an interactive overview of the demographics, economics and housing characteristics of our county and its nine Supervisor Districts.
     
  • Annual Demographics Reports: These reports deliver an extensive array of demographic details on subjects such as population estimates and forecasts; housing units and their characteristics; residential development activity; and commercial and industrial gross floor area.
     
  • Rental Housing Complex Analysis Reports: These reports provide summary-level data on various rental housing topics, including the inventory of rental units, vacancy rate, square footage, and monthly rental costs. In addition, the For Rent interactive visualization highlights the main findings regarding living costs and affordability.
     
  • Community Profile Interactive Visualization: This interactive tool visualizes economic and demographic data for 75 communities, including population, race, education, employment, income, languages, poverty, travel time to work, commercial and industrial GFA and housing units.
     
  • Demographic Interactive Mapper: This web application offers user-friendly access to the most current demographic data for Fairfax County at 15 different geographical levels. The data provided includes total population estimates; 5-year population forecasts; commercial gross floor area; and housing units categorized by type, age, and market value. 
     
  • Census Bureau Data Dissemination: As the U.S. Census Bureau’s liaison in Fairfax County, our team supports the bureau's programs, including the decennial census and the redistricting process, as well as Census Summaries and American Community Survey data.
     
  • Occupations of Employed Residents Visualization: This interactive tool provides an overview of the occupations of employed residents aged 16 and older, detailing employment and earnings data by occupation and various demographic groups.   
     
  • Poverty Visualization: This interactive infographic overviews poverty in our county. It offers detailed poverty data for special demographic groups as well as by age, gender, race/ethnicity, employment status and living arrangements.
