Celebrate Community Involvement in Local Parks at White Gardens on Sept. 28

White Gardens PropertyJoin the Fairfax County Park Authority in celebrating National Public Lands Day on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 10 a.m. to noon, at the John C. and Margaret K. White Gardens Horticultural Park (White Gardens).

Since 1994, National Public Lands Day has celebrated the thousands of volunteers who help to preserve, restore and improve America’s public lands each year. In that spirit, the Park Authority will host a community “open park” event to celebrate and learn more about White Gardens and upcoming opportunities for community involvement to preserve this amazing park.

Originally acquired in 1999, this lovely 13-acre park is home to a rich habitat with choice overstory trees, native plant communities, a naturalistic native meadow, rhododendron collection, walking trails and more. Staff will lead garden walks throughout the morning highlighting the many natural features of the park and provide information about ways in which community volunteers will play a huge role in the park’s preservation.

John C. and Margaret K. White Gardens Horticultural Park is located at 6722 Princess Anne Lane, Falls Church. For information about the event, please reach out to Judith.Zatsick@fairfaxcounty.gov or David.Alexander@fairfaxcounty.gov.

Cox Communications Recognizes Outstanding Park Employees

Cox Communication Award RecipientsFive outstanding Park Authority staff members were recognized by Cox Communications for their exceptional service and contributions to the Fairfax County Park system. The recognition ceremony took place in conjunction with the annual Lake Accotink Celebration Day on Saturday, Aug. 24.

The following staff members were recognized:

  • William Douglas: As the Area 3 Park Operations Manager, Douglas has pioneered the use of dual-use pickleball courts and ensured equitable park maintenance. His efforts have fostered stronger community appreciation and increased use of park facilities throughout southern Fairfax County.
  • Adam Wynn: A dedicated project coordinator, Wynn has gone above and beyond in his service to the Braddock District community. His recent work includes adding shade structures and trees to Monticello Park and designing a new playground for Lake Accotink Park. Wynn’s creative, solutions-oriented approach exemplifies public service at its best.
  • Ginger Colon: Colon is an outstanding aquatics instructor at Oakmont Rec Center. She has created a welcoming environment, particularly for one young swimmer, whose positive experience has been shaped by Colon’s kindness and encouragement.
  • Keith O’Connor: O’Connor oversees daily operations at Burke Lake Park, one of the most visited parks in the Springfield District. His leadership and dedication ensure that every visitor enjoys a memorable experience, from concerts and lakeside activities to trails and amusement amenities.
  • Dan Grulke: As the park manager at Lake Accotink Park, Grulke has played a crucial role in connecting Cox Communications with the park. Through his efforts, more than 250 volunteer hours have been organized to beautify the grounds. Grulke’s ambassadorial role has also inspired Cox employees to explore volunteer opportunities at the park.

Cox Communications, a strong advocate for protecting and preserving the natural resources of Northern Virginia, launched its first ever “Outstanding Employees” campaign earlier this year. Employees were nominated by the community for their commitment to keeping Fairfax County parks and recreation areas in pristine condition and for being stewards of the environment.

“We have many residents, businesses, and community organizations who understand that the exceptional quality of our park system is the result of the constant effort and dedication of literally thousands of individuals as a part of our Park Authority Team,” said Park Authority Executive Director Jai Cole. “I’m proud of our staff and grateful to Cox Communications for their desire to recognize our efforts in such a manner.”

For more information about this event, contact the Public Information Office at Parkmail@fairfaxcounty.gov.
