Surplus Property Programs

As a large local government, Fairfax County Government generates a wide variety of surplus equipment.  The Department of Procurement and Material Management (DPMM) ensures responsible disposal of this equipment.

What is responsible disposal?  We think it is a balance of:
• donating to charities who further our mission
• selling our surplus equipment using online, live and sealed bid auctions
• trading in equipment back to our contracted vendors, including ‘producer responsibility’ or take-back clauses in new contracts to enhance recycling options
• dealing with waste intelligently by recycling e-waste, toner cartridges, scrap metal, used tires and spent oil

Through this “toolbox” of options, we positively impact our environment by reducing waste and improve the County’s bottom line by cutting disposal costs and increasing revenue.

Surplus Property Auctions

County contractor, PublicSurplus.com hosts our direct auction site.  You will find everything from heavy machinery to office supplies posted on their website.    Instructions on how to participate are posted on the website and registration is free.  Please refer to the sales Terms and Conditions before bidding on County surplus. In general, we require the winner to pay within 5 business days and pickup within an additional 5 business days.  All sales are final and are made on an “as is, where is” basis.  No refunds. No returns.
