~ More than two dozen homeowners reimbursed ~

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. - Seven months after launching, Fairfax County’s Flood Mitigation Assistance Program (FMAP) has provided funding to 23 homeowners to help safeguard their properties from flood damage. The program, which reimburses 50% of eligible floodproofing project costs—up to $5,000 per property, continues to support residents in strengthening flood resilience.
County resident, Rajiv Bartakke, shared how FMAP helped him mitigate flooding at his home in the Dranesville District after experiencing water damage in his basement.
“I installed a new sump pump, drainage system, and waterproofing features, and FMAP reimbursed me for half of the costs,” Bartakke said. “The process was simple, and I highly recommend it to other homeowners.”
He spent about $7,300 on the upgrades and was reimbursed nearly $3,700 through FMAP.
How FMAP Works
FMAP is a reimbursement initiative, funded by Fairfax County and administered by the Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District (NVSWCD), designed to help homeowners, HOAs, condo associations, and places of worship implement flood mitigation projects. Renters may also apply with the property owner’s permission.
Projects completed on or after July 1, 2024, may be eligible for reimbursement, including:
- Battery backups for sump pumps
- Flood barriers and flood vents
- French drains and surface regrading
- Waterproofing sealants and utility flood covers
- Portable submersible pumps and other floodproofing measures
