Lake Accotink

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va – A new multilingual public engagement website has been launched by Fairfax County to facilitate public feedback on the Smaller Lake Accotink Preservation Feasibility Study. It aligns with the County’s One Fairfax policy and is the central location for public engagement on this study. The study aims to understand sediment transport within Accotink Creek and Lake Accotink while exploring the feasibility of preserving a 20 to 40-acre lake at a depth of 4 to 8 feet.

Information about the study and opportunities for the public to provide ongoing input will be communicated primarily through this website. The county recently conducted a public survey to gauge input on how to best shape the future of Lake Accotink. The results are informing outreach and can be found on the Public Input website under Additional Resources.

“Facilitating active public engagement is a top priority for the Smaller Lake Accotink Preservation Feasibility Study to ensure transparency and information exchange between the county, residents, and stakeholders,” said Stormwater Planning Division Director Joni Calmbacher.

The feasibility study is a multi-year effort that includes evaluating potential smaller lake options coordinated with and utilizing results from the county’s sedimentation rate study, United States Geological Survey monitoring, and the Lake Accotink dam assessment currently underway.

About Lake Accotink

Lake Accotink provides valuable recreational opportunities to Fairfax County residents and supports a variety of wildlife. It is a popular location for many people from different cultures and backgrounds. However, due to the large, developed area upstream, and the significant amounts of sediment that flows into the lake, continuing to dredge the lake to maintain its current size may be cost prohibitive, have a negative impact on our natural resources, and disruptive to adjacent communities.
