FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va – It is a new year, and some positive changes are taking place within the Department of Public Works and Environmental Services.

The agency is rebranding some of its programs to better reflect their work and services to sustain our environment. Over the next few months changes to reflect the new names will be rolling out on documents and brochures, the county website, building signage, swag, etc.

Water Resources and Infrastructure (WRI) is the new name of the program that comprises the Stormwater Management and Wastewater Management programs. A new campus facility housing both entities under one roof is under construction in Burke.

The Noman M. Cole, Jr. Water Recycling Facility (NMCWRF) more accurately describes the work at the plant and is a more positive side of the clean water mission. The former name was Noman M. Cole, Jr. Pollution Control Plant. The name change focuses more on water recycling, as it better describes the plant’s function as a successful water reuse program for the past decade, which has benefited county residents and has led to a robust ecosystem for wildlife near the facility.

Urban and Community Forestry Division (UCFD) is the new moniker for the Urban Forestry Management Division. UCFD also has changed the Forest Pest Branch to Forest Health Branch and is home to the new Watershed Forestry Branch, which will establish a new business unit for tree canopy and planting programs.
