~ Visitors welcomed on Dec. 6 ~
It’s going to be bigger and better than ever!! For the past several years, the holiday season has ushered in the Open House at the Noman M. Cole, Jr. Water Recycling Facility. It’s a day when the public is invited to tour the fascinating and award-winning wastewater treatment facility. This year the Wastewater Management Program is pulling out all the stops.
The theme is: A Sweet Journey to Clean Water. Visitors can participate in a variety of activities, and there will be a Touch-a-Truck event for kids, as well as bus, tunnel and walking tours of the facility. Festive drinks and snacks will be provided. But there’s also an educational component so visitors can learn what happens to their water when it goes down the drain.
Date: Saturday, December 6, 2025
Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Address: 9519 Richmond Highway | Lorton, VA 22079
The facility is undergoing construction to increase its capacity from 67 million gallons per day to 87 million gallons per day, so the parking lot is off limits. Attendees can use the side gate at 9519 Richmond Highway, where they can experience Touch-a-Truck, then hop on our bus tour right away.
Noman M. Cole, Jr. Water Recycling Facility is one of the most advanced treatment plants in the nation. It has three miles of underground tunnels and an ultra-high-tech Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor (one of only four such nitrogen-removal reactors in the United States). Since 2021, the plant has utilized an ultraviolet (UV) light process to disinfect wastewater.
