Mason district glass recycling can art contest

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va. – The Purple Can at the Mason District Government Center is due for an upgrade and nearby students are being asked to help enhance its appearance with recycling theme artwork.

Middle and high school students in the Mason District can enter a submission to participate in the 2026 Mason District Glass Recycling Can Art Contest, an initiative led by the Fairfax County Solid Waste Management Program in partnership with the Mason District Arts Advisory Council.

The contest is open to kids from 6-12 grade who attend a middle or high school in the district. Students may submit artwork individually or as part of a group. One group winner will be selected from 6-8 grade and one from 9-12 grade.

Winning artwork will be displayed on the Purple Can located at the Mason District Government Center. The contest theme focuses on the benefits and importance of glass recycling for the community, with the goal of raising awareness about proper glass recycling practices.

Artwork submissions are due by Friday, Feb. 27, 2026. Winners will be announced on Earth Day in April 2026.

Additional information about the contest, including submission guidelines, is available at Recycle Glass at the Purple Bin.
