News: Lee and Lee Jackson Memorial Highway renamed Route 29 and Route 50.
All County agencies that provide a service based on a Fairfax County residential address will be making address changes to their systems. No direct customer/resident action with the agency is required.
- Fairfax County Land Development Services will notify the United States Postal Service (USPS) of the address changes associated with the Confederate Roadway renaming project when the addresses go into effect. Questions related to how the Post Office handles the transition must be directed to your local postmaster.
The decision to change the highway names was made after careful consideration and input from community members and business owners. In July 2021, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors established the Confederate Names Task Force to review the names of Lee Highway (U.S. Route 29) and Lee-Jackson Memorial Highway (U.S. Route 50), and to make recommendations to the Board.
On June 23, 2020, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, requested the History Commission prepare a report listing a full inventory of Confederate street names, monuments and public places in Fairfax County and on Fairfax County-owned property.
Changing Your Street or Subdivision Name
The History Commission report lists 157 locations within the county with Confederate associated names, including street and subdivisions names.
Fairfax County Public Schools Renaming
Fairfax County Public Schools updated its process for renaming schools in 2019 adding that school names will reflect an inclusive and respectful learning environment as outlined in the One Fairfax Policy.
