The Snowden Ashford Walkway and Roadway Improvements (also known as the Giles run and Laurel Hill project) seeks to improve the former access road to the DC Workhouse and Reformatory in Lorton (Mount Vernon District). The project includes:
- new pavement section for the existing two-lane road;
- widening the gravel shoulders;
- new guard rail; and
- a new eight foot wide, 1,500 linear foot asphalt trail along the east side of Snowden Ashford Road that will connect Lorton Road to the Laurel Hill Adaptive Reuse Development area.
The project is designed to maintain the current, rural character of the roadway. One lane of traffic will remain open during construction.
Once the construction is completed, road maintenance will be transferred to VDOT, and the asphalt trail will be maintained by Fairfax County.
