The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) recently completed work at the intersection of Silverbrook Road and Crosspointe Drive, improving pedestrian connectivity and providing safer access for residents to reach community destinations without a car.

“Improvements provide increased safety for families and pedestrians traversing the intersection, with improved connectivity to Silverbrook Elementary School just in time for the new school year,” said FCDOT Engineer Galappa Madhusudhan. “The Crosspointe Swim and Raquet Club and nearby recreational paths should also be more accessible.” 

One main project improvement is a new pedestrian refuge island on Silverbrook Road. that allows pedestrians to cross three lanes of oncoming traffic to a marked location where they can pause and assess traffic from the other direction before completing the crossing. Other improvements include new crosswalks and upgrades of existing curb ramps that align with new crosswalks and meet ADA and Public Rights-of-Way Accessibility Guideline (PROWAG) current standards. 

The project is part of FCDOT's ongoing commitment to improving pedestrian safety options throughout Fairfax County and was completed in partnership with the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services, which managed the construction of FCDOT’s project design.
