Fairfax County Celebrates Community Development Week - April 2 - 6 , 2018

Join us in recognizing the importance and achievements of the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) program in improving the quality of life in Fairfax County.

Throughout Fairfax County, programs funded by CDBG and HOME provide and preserve decent affordable housing, neighborhood improvements, economic revitalization, community facilities and critical public services. These services primarily benefit thousands of low and moderate income residents, the homeless, the elderly and persons with disabilities.

Community Development Week provides an opportunity to focus on and recognize the efforts of our nonprofit partners and the thousands of beneficiaries of this federal funding throughout the county.

Proclamation from the Board of Supervisors

WHEREAS, the week of April 2-6, 2018 has been designated as National Community Development Week to celebrate the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program, now in its 43rd year of operation and the HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) program, now in its 26th year; and

WHEREAS, the County of Fairfax has received $225.3 million from the CDBG program over the past 43 years and $51.5 million over the past 26 years from the HOME program; which has supported the development of affordable housing that has benefited very low- to moderate-income persons, including the elderly, persons with disabilities, persons experiencing chronic or frequent homelessness, and children; and

WHEREAS, in Fairfax County, the Community Development Block Grant program and the HOME Investment Partnerships program have fostered a strong network among local government, residents, businesses, and non-profit organizations working to meet the needs of residents of Fairfax County;

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Supervisors does hereby designate the week of April 2 through April 6 as “Community Development Week” in Fairfax County.

This year, Community Development Week is being recognized from April 2 through April 6. CDBG and HOME Facts

In Fiscal Year (FY) 2017, the Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) and the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority (FCRHA) have used HOME and CDBG funds to preserve a total of 214 housing units/beds via the financing of purchases by nonprofit affordable housing providers. All have affordability periods of a minimum of 30 years.
CDBG funding has supported our non-profit partners in providing services and activities to nearly 500 clients in FY 17, to include crisis intervention assistance and self-sufficiency support.
HOME funding provided tenant-based rental assistance (TBRA) to 43 families serving 124 beneficiaries in FY17.
