On July 29, 2020, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors authorized the establishment of the Affordable Housing Preservation Task Force to develop a comprehensive plan to preserve the county’s current stock of committed affordable and "market affordable" housing. After two months of planning, the task force is preparing for its inaugural meeting on Thursday, October 1 at 2pm.

“Our first meeting will largely be centered around establishing a foundational understanding of the group’s mission, timeline, and becoming familiar with several critical guiding policies and initiatives pertaining to the work ahead,” said Judith Cabelli, Fairfax County’s Director of Affordable Housing Development.

The task force will begin a several-month-long effort to provide the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors with policy recommendations for creative and sustainable housing preservation initiatives that are consistent with the One Fairfax Initiative and best practices. Key issues to be addressed will include:

• Definitions for the types of preservation that can occur in communities
• Typology of properties at risk and characteristics to guide prioritizing properties or neighborhoods in need of action sooner
• A comprehensive set of preservation strategies the includes recommended policies and tools to achieve the goal of no net loss of affordability
