March 18 Board Matter: Fifth Annual Tour de Hunter Mill is Sunday, May 4

Background:

Mr. Chairman and colleagues, I am inviting you all to attend the fifth annual Tour de Hunter Mill bike event on Sunday, May 4. There will be two routes for this community bike ride: a short ride and a long ride.

There is a route for every ability! Each year, we also feature new routes to give riders a fresh view and highlight bike friendly areas across the district. This year both routes include a stretch on Fairfax County’s portion of the W&OD Trail which just celebrated its 50th anniversary this past fall — and we’ll also be riding along the trail over the new bridge that spans Wiehle Avenue. This life-saving bridge was one of the trail’s recent major improvements which, Mr. Chairman, we celebrated together in December, along with bicycle advocates and NOVA Parks.

The routes for Tour de Hunter Mill will begin and end at the North County Governmental Center.

More information about the ride may be found on the Hunter Mill District webpage at fairfaxcounty.gov/huntermill/tour-de-hunter-mill. Registration is anticipated to open on April 1.

As an incentive to register, you’ll get a pair of our always-popular branded bike socks which are orange-colored this year.

I also want to thank the many individuals and organizations whose assistance make the Tour de Hunter Mill possible, including the Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling, Reston Bike Club, Reston Community Center, NOVA Parks and Fairfax County Police Department.

Motion:

Therefore, Mr. Chairman, I ask without objection that the Office of Public Affairs provide promotional support for the 2025 Tour de Hunter Mill as appropriate.
