Fairfax County, Va. – A new centralized data repository - showing how Fairfax County’s Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) is meeting the county’s environmental sustainability goals is now available to the public online.

The DPWES Sustainability Hub centralizes – in one easy-to-find location – information and data about sustainability achievements happening within DPWES’s four business areas: Capital Facilities, Solid Waste Management, Stormwater Management and Wastewater Management. The hub also provides service and program opportunities for the public to get involved to make their own sustainability strides.

Navigating the New Web Resource

Using the DPWES Sustainability Hub is easy. The web page is divided into four core sustainability sectors: Energy, Waste, Design and Construction, and Natural Resources. Each sector has areas of focus with specific actions DPWES is taking, as well as opportunities and services for the public.

This new online resource illustrates DPWES’s commitment to transparency and long-term sustainability and tracks the organization’s progress. The page showcases how DPWES integrates sustainability into public buildings, solid waste, wastewater, stormwater, and urban forestry, and how these programs contribute to countywide climate and resilience goals.

“The Department of Public Works and Environmental Services exists to create and preserve a sustainable community,” said Chris Herrington, DPWES director. “The new DPWES Sustainability Hub is a win for everyone in Fairfax County because it shows the public our commitment and progress in achieving Fairfax County’s sustainability goals.”

“People don’t always associate public works with environmental sustainability,” said Kambiz Agazi, DPWES sustainability officer. “Sustainability is central to all DPWES programs, from initiatives to reduce waste, to constructing county facilities with the highest sustainability standards, to increasing the county’s tree canopy to reduce our carbon footprint.”

In 2025 alone, renewable energy generated by DPWES from landfill gas capture and solar systems at its facilities saved Fairfax County more than $840,000 and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 3,000 metric tons, the same as powering 630 homes for one year.

The DPWES Sustainability Hub also includes a dashboard that illustrates the progress in the various areas.

Key Performance Metrics

The Sustainability Hub highlights key performance metrics tied to county climate plans, including:

  • Almost 20% reduction in energy use from baseline level
  • Close to 10% of DPWES electricity use is produced from landfill gas capture and solar systems
  • 13 new county buildings achieving LEED status since 2021
  • 1.1 to 1.3 million gallons of wastewater treated and recycled per day and reused for irrigation and process cooling in the generation of electricity.”

Agazi encourages Sustainability Hub visitors to check back regularly to see DPWES’s continued progress in the four sustainability sectors.

“DPWES has a lot of good news to share about its sustainability efforts as we move closer to the county’s zero-waste goals and carbon neutrality,” Agazi said. “Our new online Sustainability Hub shows the public in a transparent way how DPWES works every day to preserve and protect the environment in Fairfax County.”
