Together, we’re making Fairfax County safer, stronger, and better protected from flooding!

FAIRFAX COUNTY, Va – A premium discount is coming for Fairfax County residents who either have, or plan to buy, flood insurance.
Because the county participates in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) Community Rating System (CRS) program, it has been able to secure a larger 25% discount on premium costs. This new discount rate applies to all policies issued or renewed on or after October 1, 2026. The previous rate was 20%.
Since 1993, the county has been a part of the CRS program, enabling our residents to get better discounts on residential insurance premiums. This latest discount is a direct result of the county’s CRS rating getting elevated to Class 5, one of the highest in Virginia. This achievement demonstrates Fairfax County’s dedication to reducing flood risks, improving public safety, minimizing property damage, and strengthening disaster resilience in our community.
Participation in the CRS program saves county residents more than $1.1 million annually in flood insurance premiums.
The Mount Vernon District has experienced significant flooding over the years. Supervisor Dan Storck welcomes the opportunity for residents to realize additional savings, “We are focused on reducing your costs and this great program makes flood insurance more affordable for Fairfax County residents. Many of our Belle View, Belle Haven and New Alexandria residents know firsthand the damage flooding can cause and how important it is to be prepared. Our Resiliency Plan and investments to reduce flooding are saving our residents money and better protecting their homes.”
NFIP flood insurance policies are available for nearly any type of home or living situation, including single-family homes, condos, townhomes, manufactured and mobile homes, and rental units. Property owners as well as tenants can purchase coverage. Policies are available to cover the building or its contents and are not bundled automatically. Insurance is available whether your property is inside or outside of a mapped FEMA floodplain.
Because premiums and savings amounts can vary, contact your insurance agent to see how much you could save and help protect the life you’ve built!
