The Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) recently completed work on a new sidewalk along Chain Bridge Road between Courthouse Road and Sutton Road, improving pedestrian connectivity between neighborhoods and providing safer access to transit, schools, parks and other community destinations.
"This new sidewalk improves safety and accessibility by providing a continuous, ADA-accessible pedestrian route along Chain Bridge Road," said FCDOT Engineer Mohamad El Kaissi. “It better connects neighborhoods, transit stops, and nearby community destinations while giving residents a safer and more comfortable option for walking.”
Improvements include:
- approximately 1,760 linear feet of 5-foot-wide concrete sidewalk
- two concrete bus loading pads
- reconstruction of four concrete driveway entrances
- high-visibility crosswalks and pavement markings
- concrete curb and gutter improvements
- ADA-compliant concrete curb-cut ramps at roadway intersections
- asphalt milling and overlay at three intersections
- pedestrian signal modifications
- storm drainage improvements and various utility adjustments
The project was completed in partnership with the Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services which managed the construction of FCDOT’s project design.
The Chain Bridge Road Walkway project is part of FCDOT's ongoing commitment to improving pedestrian safety and expanding multimodal transportation options throughout Fairfax County.
