Fairfax County Honors "Best Workplaces for Commuters"

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recognized 12 employers who have taken steps to encourage environmentally-friendly commuter practices, reduce traffic congestion, and preserve the region’s air quality at its meeting today by recognizing them as a “Best Workplace for Commuters” (BWC). 

BWC Program Manager, Julie Bond, from the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR), presented the BWC employers and sites to the Board of Supervisors at its meeting on Feb. 4, 2025.

Honorees included:

  • Advanced Simulation Technology inc. (ASTi), specializes in audio and communications solutions within the aerospace and defense industry and is based in Herndon (Dranesville District). ASTi is located minutes from the W&OD trail, making biking a popular commuting option. ASTi provides onsite bikes for use, storage, showers and lockers. Staff at ASTi take advantage of telework, flexible work hours and unlimited sick leave.
  • Brookfield Properties, Operated by CBRE, manages multiple properties in Fairfax County, and has been recognized for offering their employees commuter transit benefits, hybrid work options and a variety of commuter friendly amenities at each location.
  • Groundswell, a McLean-based (Providence District) technology company focused on bringing a modernized solutions to federal agencies, uses commuter benefits to provide all Groundswell employees, regardless of geographic location, access to resources that contribute to a more sustainable future. Groundswell offers their employees commuter transit benefits, hybrid and telework options, and commuter amenities including a metro-accessible Headquarters office, free state-of-the-art gym, café, bike racks, electric car charging stations and free garage parking.  
  • Inova Center for Personalized Health (ICPH), in Fairfax (Providence District), offers team members from the region’s largest healthcare services provider a pre-tax commuter benefits program, a variety of transit options including Metrorail, Metrobus and Fairfax Connector, campus shuttles, remote and hybrid work options, numerous electronic vehicle (EV) charging stations, and showers and lockers for active commuters.
  • The Northern Virginia Transportation Authority (NVTA) is a regional organization responsible for developing Northern Virginia’s long-range transportation plan. NVTA is committed to planning, prioritizing and funding multimodal projects that reduce congestion and enhance regional connectivity. NVTA was recognized after a recent move to a transit-oriented location near the Dunn Loring Metrorail Station (Providence District), and now offers commuter transit benefits, direct access to Metro and Fairfax Connector, flextime, hybrid work options, carpool options, as well as active transportation options for biking and walking.
  • RTC West, Operated by JBG Smith, located in Reston (Hunter Mill District) was recognized as a “Best Site for Commuters.” It hosts 64 businesses and retailers that have more than 590 employees. With a short walk to the Reston Town Center Station, tenants enjoy the sustainable transportation options available, including an onsite Capital Bikeshare station and EV charging stations, as well as a gym with showers and lockers, a variety of onsite amenities, and kiosks with real-time traveler information, including transit. 
  • Scout Space, headquartered in Reston (Hunter Mill District), is a leading in-space observation service provider focused on space security and comprehensive Space Domain Awareness (SDA). Scout Space was recognized for their hybrid, remote, and flexible work options, as well as the commuter benefits onsite for employees.
  • Silverline Center, managed by Brookfield Properties, operated by CBRE, was recognized as a “Best Site for Commuters” in Tysons (Dranesville District), serving business and retail tenants. The campus offers Capital Bikeshare stations, showers and lockers for active commuters, close proximity to transit, restaurants and daycare onsite, and five EV charging stations.
  • Silverstone Senior Living, with locations in Fairfax and Tysons (Providence District) develops best-in-class senior housing communities, and provides opportunities for employees to enjoy greener, reduced-stress commutes. Silverstone communities are deliberately transit accessible, offering shuttle services, bike storage, showers and locker rooms for active commuters, and pretax commuter transit benefits for employees. These communities not only prioritize resident comfort, but also focus on the well-being of staff members, and play a key strategy in attracting and retaining top talent. 
  • Systematic, an international IT services provider in Centreville (Sully District) has been recognized because of their remote and hybrid work options and the variety of commuter amenities, including a daycare, restaurants, and a fitness center with showers and lockers for active commuters.
  • Transurban North America, headquartered in McLean (Providence District), is one of the world’s leading infrastructure developers and operators, known for its pioneering managed lanes network in Virginia as well as its contributions to road safety and mobility technology. They have been recognized based on their remote and hybrid work options, flexible work environment, showers and lockers for active commuters, and commuter friendly building amenities. 
  • Tysons Community Alliance (TCA) is an independent, non-profit organization committed to the ongoing transformation of Tysons, Virginia, into a vibrant, inclusive, globally attractive urban center (Providence and Hunter Mill Districts). Recognized for their commuter transit benefits, scooter and bike share programs, hybrid work, and the variety of commuter friendly practices and amenities made available to employees. 

"Best Site for Commuters" is a BWC designation created for commercial and retail developers, shopping malls, business campuses and other multi-employer developments. 

"Fairfax County has played a vital role in the Best Workplaces for Commuters (BWC) program as a long-time partner. Their contributions have led to the recognition of many employers who excel in providing outstanding commuting solutions, setting a benchmark for organizations nationwide," said Julie Bond, BWC program manager.

"With the executive order to return to in-person work, commuting in the National Capital Region is about to get much more complicated,” said Marcus Moore, Fairfax County Department of Transportation senior transportation planner. “Programs like ‘Best Workplaces for Commuters’ offer a way to celebrate those employers who not only make it a little easier for their employees to get to the office, but also ease congestion through commuter benefits to reduce the volume of cars on our roads.”
