When you need to get from Point A to Point B with more than two feet but less than four wheels, borrowing a bicycle with Capital Bikeshare might be your answer! Capital Bikeshare is a regional bicycle transit system jointly owned by Fairfax County, Arlington County, City of Alexandria, City of Fairfax, City of Falls Church, Prince George’s County, Montgomery County and the District of Columbia.
Fairfax County’s Capital Bikeshare began in 2016 with 18 stations in the Reston and Tysons communities. Today, Fairfax County has 96 Capital Bikeshare stations located across county – including a Capital Bikeshare station at every Metrorail station in Fairfax County. The county’s Capital Bikeshare fleet now numbers more than 500 bikes – over 200 of which are electric bikes!

Public engagement plays a critical role in ensuring the successful growth, efficiency and sustainability of the Capital Bikeshare Program. Check below for proposals under consideration and opportunities for public participation in their respective review processes. We will continue to update this section with proposals for system changes/expansions as information becomes available.
FCDOT will host a virtual public meeting on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, to discuss a proposal to add up to 17 new Capital Bikeshare stations along the I-66 corridor between Fairfax/Fair Lakes and Dunn Loring. During the meeting, staff will explain how bikeshare works, discuss project funding and share maps of the proposed station locations.
FCDOT hosted a virtual public meeting on proposed Capital Bikeshare stations in the Braddock and Mason Districts on Thursday, Aug. 22, 2024. Residents learned more about plans for bikeshare in the community, asked questions and provided feedback. The station installations are anticipated to occur in Spring 2026.
The Fairfax County Department of Transportation held a virtual meeting on expanding the Capital Bikeshare network in the Mount Vernon District on Jan. 18, 2024. FCDOT staff presented information on 12 proposed bikeshare stations around the Huntington Metro Station, Fort Hunt Park and Mount Vernon Trail. Installation of the stations along Huntington Avenue and at the Huntington North Metro entrance were completed in August 2025. The remaining station installations are anticipated to occur in Spring 2026.

August 2025: Expansion of Capital Bikeshare to locations at the Huntington (Mount Vernon District) and Innovation Center (Dranesville and Hunter Mill Districts) Metro Stations and the surrounding areas.
December 2023: As part of the Commuter Choice funding, FCDOT completed 10 installations of Capital Bikeshare in the Vienna/Merrifield area.
December 2022: Expansion of Capital Bikeshare in Franconia and Providence Districts.
November 2022: FCDOT was awarded Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP) funding for the expansion of the Capital Bikeshare network in Reston and has installed all but one station from the originally-planned 19 locations in 2021.
