BRT Project Background

Nine future BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) stations, from Huntington Metrorail Station to Fort Belvoir, along Kings Highway (in mixed traffic lanes) and Richmond Highway (in dedicated bus lanes).
Improved connections to: major employment centers, shopping centers and residential communities.
Includes new BRT stations and dedicated lanes, as well as pedestrian and bicycle facilities, lighting, improved crossings and other amenities.

2011:	Virginia General Assembly instructed the Virginia Department of Rail and Public Transportation (DRPT) to evaluate previous studies and determine feasibility of transit improvements in a 27-mile-long segment of the Route 1 corridor.
2013-2014:	DRPT conducted a Route 1 Multimodal Alternatives Analysis for an approximately 16-mile segment of Route 1, from I-495/Huntington Metro to Woodbridge, in coordination with Fairfax County, Prince William County, the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), and the Office of Intermodal Planning and Investment (OIPI). In October 2014, the Route 1 Multimodal Alternatives Analysis Executive Steering Committee adopted a resolution in support of the study's final recommendations: a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system to be constructed in the short term and a three-mile extension of the Metrorail Yellow Line to Hybla Valley in the long term.
2015:	The final Route 1 Multimodal Alternatives Analysis report was completed January 2015.
2017:	VDOT kicked off their portion of the project with two public information meetings.
2018:	The Fairfax Board of Supervisors approved a Comprehensive Plan Amendment on March 20, 2018, which recommends implementing a BRT system along Richmond Highway, in addition to other transportation and land use changes to support the system and improve connectivity.
2018:	The Richmond Highway BRT project kicked off, beginning with the environmental review process.

Richmond Highway Corridor Improvements: VDOT project in the southern
end of the corridor. Includes widening of roadway to support BRT as well as installation of BRT lanes and bicycle and pedestrian improvements.
Comprehensive Plan Amendment (Embark) and Commercial Revitalization District: Fairfax County Department of Planning and Development activities supporting BRT and land use changes along the corridor.
