The Environmental Committee works on and discusses county and regional programs, policies, and efforts that may impact the county and region’s physical environment and sustainability. The Committee addresses a variety of service areas, as they relate to environmental sustainability, including land use, transportation, water, waste management, parks and ecological resources, climate and energy and environmental stewardship.
Specific issues that come before the Committee include climate mitigation planning, operational energy use and efficiency, community-wide energy use, education and outreach initiatives, sustainable development policies, climate adaptation and resilience planning, wastewater management, stormwater management, watershed planning, natural landscaping, urban forest management, air quality planning, and solid waste management and recycling.
Through its work on these issues, the Committee strives to uphold and advance the principles and objectives in the Environmental Vision and other countywide policies, to conserve Fairfax County’s limited natural resources, and to protect the environment and high quality of life for current and future generations.
