75th Anniversary of D-Day

Board Matter

February 5, 2019

Madam Chairman:

This June will mark the 75th anniversary of the D-Day Invasion when Allied Forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, beginning a months long campaign to push the Germans out of France.

Operation Overlord, the military code name for the Battle of Normandy, began in the early morning of June 6, 1944. 160,000 American, Canadian, and British troops embarked in the largest amphibious mission in history. Their targets were Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword beaches. Victory was far from guaranteed. The Germans spent years fortifying the shores of northern France with loads of artillery. At least 10,000 Allied troops paid the ultimate sacrifice on that day, including 6603 Americans. In total, Allied forces sent over one million troops to Gallic coast by July 4. The brave and relentless mission, led by General Dwight Eisenhower, was the most significant campaign on the Western Front and helped lead the Nazis to their ultimate downfall.

Madam Chairman, in honor of the heroic WWII veterans from Fairfax County, I move, without objection, that the Board invite the American Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and any surviving local WWII veterans to honor this historic anniversary at the first board meeting in June.
