September is Workforce Development Month

(Posted 2024 September)

Workforce Development MonthEntering the workforce for the first time or finding a new job to get on a better path can be a challenging, yet rewarding experience. Knowing which career may be a good fit, gaining transferrable skills for today’s economy, and becoming the strongest candidate during the application process are common roadblocks to people finding their success story. That’s where workforce development programs and professionals can help.

Join us this September for Workforce Development Month as we highlight the impact of Fairfax County Employment Services’ workforce development programs in the northern Virginia region. Employment Services supports 20,000-30,000 annual job seekers through multiple Workforce Development Centers, and another 2,000 clients who benefit from comprehensive support services and case management. Our programs support job seekers ages 16 and over, with dedicated services for youth, parents, and older adults seeking employment and training. Many clients come from underserved communities and some face language or other barriers when applying to jobs on their own.

Helping people create a better life for themselves and their families is the “why” behind the hard work and motivation Employment Services staff bring to their own careers:

“Seeing their success stories – when someone obtains a job and how appreciative they are. How we’ve confronted their barriers and helped them overcome them. And seeing how they go through this process - it’s incredibly rewarding.”

Beyond the outstanding impacts on individuals and families, workforce development also supports the regional economy as a whole. In northern Virginia, there is both a high demand for skilled workers and a high cost of living, creating layered challenges for disadvantaged job seekers. When these job seekers can connect with employment services and gain hands-on job experience, certifications, and more, it grows the pool of qualified candidates and helps businesses meet hiring needs.

Workforce development is a highly dynamic field in northern Virginia and our staff rise to meet the challenge every day. Subscribe to our weekly Career Resources newsletter and follow us on Facebook to see more success stories, learn about regional trends, and recognize our workforce development programs and professionals.
