Application Process

Minimum Qualifications

  • Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to high school graduation or possession of a GED issued by a state department of education 
  • Eighteen years or older at the time of application 
  • Possess a valid motor vehicle driver's license at the time of application, and at all times during employment in the uniformed service 
  • No driving suspensions or more than two moving violation within the last 12 months 
  • Drug free for the past 12 months 
  • Eligible to hold a VA EMS certification  
  • Eligible to work in the United States 

Note: Illegal drugs use during the last twelve months, and/or two or more moving traffic violations during the last twelve months will disqualify you from further consideration.

Fairfax Fire and Rescue holds no residency requirement for uniformed staff.

No Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Certification is required at the time of application. However, applicants should keep in mind the requirements for EMT certifications in Virginia as this is required if selected and before recruit school begins.

Apply Online 

There are several steps to the hiring process which may take several months. The application process consists of an online application, Personal History Statement (PHS), written exam, Physical Abilities Test (PAT), medical exam, polygraph evaluation, and psychological evaluation. Additionally, every encounter with FCFRD is considered in the applicant’s application profile.

Applicants are notified by email from FCFRD Recruitment to schedule each step which must be passed before moving forward. Complete each portion of the application process on time to move on to the next phase.

Applications will be accepted online through Fairfax County’s Career Page.  First time applicants must set up an account and an email address before applying.  All other applicants can use their existing username and password.  

  • A confirmation email is sent to the applicant upon receipt of the application  
  • All supplemental questions must be answered completely.  If a question does not apply, “N/A” must be entered in the appropriate field

                                           Tips to Navigating the Application Process 

Time Management

  • Arrive 15-30 minutes early for all appointments
  • Plan route to appointment locations
  • Plan for traffic delays. Traffic in the DC Metro area can be unpredictable.

Organization

  • Maintain copies of all correspondence
    and information received and submitted during the application process

Recruitment

  • Update contact information through your Government Jobs account
  • Report updates to the following:
    • Employment
    • Certification
    • Traffic Violations
    • Arrest and Criminal Charges

 Professionalism

  • Every interaction is part of the application process. Integrity, professionalism, and respect are always noted.
  • Complete each portion of the application process on time
  • The FCFRD communicates by email.  Check emails often including spam folders.
  • Remove any inappropriate greetings from your phone.
  • Do not accumulate traffic citations
