Health Department Encourages Seasonal Flu Vaccinations

Don’t wait; vaccinate.

No Time for Flu ImageAs the weather cools down and more time is spent indoors, the Fairfax County Health Department encourages everyone 6 months and older to get a flu vaccine this Fall, preferably by the end of October. According to the CDC, Virginia is now at a Moderate level for flu.

Flu vaccination reduces the burden of flu illness, hospitalization, and death. Getting vaccinated also helps protect people who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness, including babies and young children, older people, and people with chronic health conditions. Vaccination is the single best way to reduce the risk of seasonal flu and its potentially serious complications.

Frequent hand washing, covering coughs, and avoiding people who are sick are also important ways to prevent the spread of germs and respiratory illnesses.

Based upon the annual study of flu surveillance in the southern hemisphere, researchers predict an earlier and more active flu season this year than last. Data also shows that, so far, most people seeking medical care for influenza-like symptoms in Virginia, are young children, under age 4; they account for 13.8% of total visits. This trend aligns with national figures.

“During this time last year, people were masked and taking other precautions to limit the spread of COVID-19. Those health actions also helped to limit flu activity. With most of that guidance lifted, we are seeing an uptick in flu activity this year already. The best thing people can do to prevent flu illness is to get vaccinated, “said Dr. Gloria Addo-Ayensu, Health Director for the Fairfax County Health Department. “Skipping vaccines leaves you and your family vulnerable to illnesses such as pneumococcal disease, colds, and flu. Protect yourself, your family, colleagues, friends, and community; get vaccinated and take preventive actions to stop the spread of germs.”
