“Housing Re-Up Initiative” supports affordable housing preservation and rehabilitation

The Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD) announces the availability of an estimated $1.8 million in federal funding to support the preservation, rehabilitation, and acquisition of affordable rental housing in Fairfax County.  

Named the “Housing Re-Up Initiative,” the funds are made available through the federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and HOME Investment Partnerships (HOME) programs.

Proposal guidelines and submission information can be found on the HCD website. Applications are due September 21, 2026 at 4:30 p.m. EST.

A virtual pre-proposal conference on the application process will be held on August 11, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. (noon). To receive the meeting link, email your organization’s name and the names of all attendees to Sharon.shields@fairfaxcounty.gov and DHCDGrants@fairfaxcounty.gov with the subject line “Housing Re-Up Conference Registration.”

Funding Aims to Support Housing Resiliency

The Housing Re-Up Initiative funding aims to support Fairfax County’s commitment to safety and affordability through modernizing infrastructure and systems, improving climate resiliency and energy efficiency, reducing operating costs, and enhancing the quality of life of residents.

Projects should align with the Housing and Neighborhood Livability priority area outlined in the Fairfax County 20-Year Strategic Plan. Applicants must use grant funds to rehabilitate or preserve existing or acquire new affordable housing stock, specifically scattered-site rentals or multifamily rentals of 30 units or less.
