Hiring Incentive Bonus Program

Fairfax County Government is pleased to offer hiring incentive bonuses to assist in the recruitment of new employees in certain critical job classifications. The current classifications eligible for bonuses are listed below.

A hiring incentive bonus is available to new full-time and part-time General Merit County employees who are hired into job classifications identified by the Department of Human Resources as being difficult to fill and/or critical to the County’s operations. A class that is difficult to fill is one that has taken a very long time to fill, or for which qualified candidates could not be found despite extensive recruiting efforts due to factors such as labor market shortages, aggressive growth in compensation levels for particular positions, or unique skillsets.

The Hiring Incentive Bonus Program will consist of 4 tiers of bonuses with the amount depending on various considerations, including: Operational Impact, Essential Functions, Minimum Staffing, Life/Safety Impact, Market Competition, Vacancy Rate and Fiscal Impact.

Employees in non-merit or temporary positions are not eligible. 

Former employees, hired back into County service, are eligible to receive a hiring bonus if the break in service exceeds 18 months, and they sign the hiring incentive bonus agreement.

Job postings will indicate if the position is eligible for a hiring bonus. The hiring incentives will be paid upon hire in a single lump sum, as soon as administratively feasible, and will be subject to payback provisions. Note that the bonus amount will be prorated for part-time General Merit employment.
