CALL TO ORDER:
Commission Chair Crawford called the Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Commission Meeting to order at 7:30 P.M.
Approval of Agenda: It was moved by Commissioner Malik and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the August 20, 2025, be approved as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
STAFF ISSUES: None.
COMMISSION BUSINESS:
FIR - HRC # 2024020H / HUD # 03-24-4944-8: Heath, Daniel v. ASN Fairchase LLC et al.: It was moved by Commissioner Bokhari and seconded by Commissioner Malik that the complaint be dismissed due to insufficient evidence that a violation of the Fairfax County Fair Housing Act has occurred consistent with the recommendation of OHREP. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
FIR - HRC # 2024048H / HUD # 03-25-5684-8: Henderson, Kim. Singleton’s Grove Homeowners Association, et al.: It was moved by Commissioner Shumaker and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the complaint be dismissed due to insufficient evidence that a violation of the Fairfax County Fair Housing Act has occurred consistent with the recommendation of OHREP. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Successful Conciliation - HRC # 2024058H / HUD # 03-25-5681-8: Fairfax County Human Rights Commission v. Parliaments Apartments LLC et al.: It was moved by Commissioner Malik and seconded by Commissioner Salinas that the conciliation agreement in this matter be accepted as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Successful Conciliation - HRC # 2024060H: Fairfax County Human Rights Commission v. USCMF The Reserve at Tysons Corner LLC.: It was moved by Commissioner Salinas and seconded by Commissioner Malik that the conciliation agreement in this matter be accepted as presented. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Conciliation Failure - HRC # 2016094E / EEOC #570-2016-00704C: Thomas v. Sotera Defense: It was moved by Commissioner Bokhari and seconded by Commissioner Malik that a public hearing not be scheduled. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
Conciliation Failure - HRC # 2023087E / EEOC # 10D-2025-00016: Slaughter v. My Salon Suites (Salon Suites): It was moved by Commissioner Shumaker and seconded by Commissioner Crawford that a public hearing not be scheduled and the case be closed. The motion passed by unanimous vote.
COMMUNITY CONCERNS: There were no community concerns.
PENDING BUSINESS: Commissioner Crawford informed the Commission about the Fair Housing Task Force meeting that was cancelled. Director Simms explained the reason for the cancellation was due to the lack of strong priorities and that the meeting was premature, he would like to have a strong agenda prior to the next meeting. Director Simms will inform the commissioners on a new date.
NEW BUSINESS: Director Simms informed the commission on new Student Human Rights Commission starting August 26, 2025. He mentioned how the prior students got cords for graduation representing their dedication to Human Rights, it was a big accomplishment for the office.
Commissioner Crawford mentioned upcoming elections and nominations that will be discussed in the next meeting, which will be scheduled for the first Wednesday of September.
Director Simms informed the commissioners that there is a new commissioner who is interested in the vacant spot in the Human Rights Commission, he will inform the commissioners once he learns more.
