Background:

Mr. Chairman, I am sorry to announce that one of outstanding volunteer leaders is stepping down from the History Commission. Barbara Naef has selflessly served the Hunter Mill District and Fairfax County for many years preserving county history. After a long career with the Park Authority in Historic Preservation, Historic Properties Rental Service, Archaeology, and Historic Collections, Naef continued to serve the Park Authority and the History Commission as a volunteer for nearly 20 years.  

Notably, Barbara stepped up to chair the Confederate Names Inventory Committee. Her steady and firm leadership was essential to steering such a high-profile project. On the heels of completing the Confederate Names Inventory, she then pivoted to spearheading and subsequently supporting the History Commission’s efforts to inventory Fairfax County’s African American History. Both projects were major contributions to Fairfax County’s historical record.

Nearly every previous and existing historical program that exists in Fairfax County has benefitted from her input and we are very grateful for her service.

Therefore Mr. Chairman, I request that the Office of Public Affairs prepare a certificate of recognition to be presented to Barbara Naef this fall at a time and location to be determined.
