Celebrating the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter’s 50th Anniversary

Board Matter May 19, 2026

With Chairman Jeff McKay

Background: The Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded at Howard University in 1908, making it the oldest Greek-letter organization established by African American college-educated women.

In 1976, the sorority's Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter was established by 23 African American women living and working in Fairfax County. Among these distinguished women, my predecessor, the late Supervisor Cathy Hudgins, played a pivotal role in the chapter's founding and early growth.

Over the past 50 years, the chapter has championed educational, social, and economic development throughout our community, leaving an extraordinary legacy of service. Its educational and charitable foundation alone has awarded more than $300,000 to community programs and students pursuing college or technical education. The chapter has also provided after-school and weekend meals for elementary school students, and enriched learning opportunities for middle and high schoolers through initiatives such as the Partnerships in Mathematics and Science program with Northern Virginia Community College and the Ivy Reading AKAdemy.

In 2026, the chapter joined the Stop Hunger Now project with US Hunger, where members packed a remarkable 20,000 meals in just two hours. Their spirit of service extends across the county, with longstanding support for organizations including Volunteer Fairfax, Embry Rucker Shelter, Katherine K. Hanley Shelter, and Ronald McDonald House, among many others.

Lambda Kappa Omega has further strengthened the local community by championing African American businesses in Fairfax County through the Black Dollar Campaign.

In recognition of their 50th anniversary, the Reston Museum will open an exhibit on the Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter's history on September 13, immersing visitors in a rich legacy of sisterhood and service to humanity.

Motion: Therefore, Mr. Chairman, I ask without objection that the Office of Public Affairs prepare a resolution to recognize the Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter’s 50th anniversary to be presented in the Board room on September 15, 2026.
