Supervisor Walter Alcorn invites you to explore Hunter Mill District on two wheels each May at the annual Tour de Hunter Mill!

It's a community bike ride offering two routes that change each year to offer riders a fresh view and highlight various bike-friendly areas of Hunter Mill District.

This community bike ride is for people of all ages and abilities, and you'll experience the best of Hunter Mill District on two wheels. You'll be be able to take your pick of two different scenic routes: 

  • Short Route: 11 miles
  • Long Route: 19 miles

Saddle up as an individual or ride as a team. Whether you're a seasoned cyclist or a first-time rider, you and your friends, family or colleagues may also register as a team and ride together.

Registration for the 2026 Tour de Hunter is now open! 

  • The fee is $30 per adult rider.
  • Children 15 and under participate for free, but they must ride with an adult. 
  • To register as a family (up to 5 people), please send an email to receive information about family pricing and registration instructions.
  • Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling members automatically receive a discount when using the email associated with their membership.

We only charge a fee to fund the ride, not to turn a profit. If you are unable to afford the registration fee, you may still ride, but please email us or call 703-478-0283, TTY 711, to make arrangements for free registration. 

Your registration includes the coveted Tour de Hunter Mill Socks and a $5 donation to Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling. The tour takes places rain or shine so no refunds will be provided due to weather or for other reasons. 

The routes vary every year to give riders a fresh perspective, but every year we offer both a short and long route.

Typically, the tour begins and ends at the North County Governmental Center, 1801 Cameron Glen Drive, Reston. We also offer a pit stop where you can rest, get water and snacks or use a bathroom. The routes will have you biking on trails like the W&OD, shared use paths and on the roads.  

Each year’s specific routes will be posted on the Tour de Hunter Mill registration website. The Fairfax Alliance for Better Bicycling provides them through their Ride with GPS account, but you don’t need a FABB account to access them. If you use a bluetooth device, you’ll be able to get turn-by-turn audio directions. There’s also an option to print the map and cue sheet if you wish. You must bring your own printed cue sheets, however. They are not provided.

1. Children 15 and under must be riding with a parent or guardian.

2. No refunds will be provided if the purchaser cannot attend or the event is canceled canceled. The tour is held rain or shine. However, it will be canceled in the event of severe or extreme weather, and it will not be rescheduled.

3. In the event of inclement weather, please check the website for ride day information and announcements.

4. No transfers of registration to other riders

5. Helmets are required for the duration of the ride and must be worn at all times when riding. No exceptions. If you cannot afford a helmet, RBC will be happy to loan you one.

6. Each adult is required to complete a liability waiver during online registration.

7. Minors must have their waiver signed by a parent or guardian. When you send the email to register a child, you will receive instructions about waivers for minors.

Everyone! If you’re able to ride a bike, join us. This community bike ride is designed for people of all ages and abilities, including adults, kids and families. Children age 15 or under must ride with an adult, however.

Any kind — whether it’s a road bike, tandem bike, electric bike or even a unicycle (we’d like to see that!) You’re also welcome to attach child seats or trailer to your bike.

If you're riding an e-bike, however, please review the NOVA Park e-bike rules since a portion of the Tour de Hunter Mill may be on the W&OD Trail.

We usually also offer a pit stop where you can rest, get water and snacks or use a bathroom, but it also depends on the specific routes for each year's ride. (However, rider marshals will always be able to direct you to nearby facilities if a pit stop isn't included.)

In past years, the rides have included segments of the W&OD Trail, but the routes for each year's rides are different. So, you may not be cycling on the W&OD.

The tour is scheduled for 8 a.m. to noon, but you may take as long as you want or need on the ride. We will have ride marshals along the two routes, as well as Fairfax County Police or Town of Vienna officers stationed at specific points, to assist you. They will make a last check of the routes at 11 a.m., however. Typically, the pit stop also will only be open from 9 to 11 a.m.

No. The tour is held rain or shine except in instances of extreme weather (such as a hurricane, etc). In this instance, the ride will be canceled, and it will not be rescheduled.

  • Helmet (REQUIRED)
  • Water bottles
  • Saddle bag (spare tube, tire levers, pump)
  • Spare tube (especially if you have a non-standard rim size)
  • Charged cell phone and charger
  • Red blinky tail-light (highly recommended)
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen

We want everyone to have fun and be safe, so please ride responsibly following these guidelines:

  • First and foremost, every rider must wear helmet during the entire ride.
  • When riding on the W&OD Trail, please call out your passes, slow down around pedestrians, and break into groups of no more than five riders.
  • If riding an electric bike, please follow NOVA Parks' e-bike rules when you're on the W&OD Trail.
  • Obey all regulatory signs and traffic lights.
  • Never ride against traffic; ride with traffic.
  • Use hand signals to tell motorists what you intend to do.
  • Ride in a straight line to the right of traffic, about a car-door width away from parked cars.
  • Always wear a helmet.
  • Police officers will assist riders at with some crossings. Please obey their instructions.
