Supervisor Walter Alcorn Hosts the Third Annual Tysons Forest Cleanup on April 12

Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn, in partnership with the Tysons Forest Community Task Force, invites Hunter Mill District residents to participate in the third annual Tysons Forest Cleanup. The event will take place on Sunday, April 12, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in celebration of Earth Day.

Tysons Forest is a 65-acre urban forest corridor — a "hidden green oasis" — stretching from the Dulles Toll Road to Gosnell Road. Bisected by the Old Courthouse Spring Branch stream, this vital ecosystem serves as a critical natural buffer within the urban landscape of Tysons.

“This cleanup carries out one of the actions that the task force recommended in its final report, and we’ve been we’ve been holding these annual cleanups since 2024 when the Board of Supervisors accepted their report,” said Supervisor Alcorn.

Preserving this Urban Forest

The Tysons Forest Community Task Force was convened in 2023 to develop strategies to preserve and enhance this forest while maintaining access by local residents and workers. From the beginning, the group aimed to capture lessons learned so that it could serve as model for other communities with urban forests controlled by many landowners.

“I convened a task force two years ago to develop coordinated strategies to preserve and enhance this emerald gem,” Alcorn said. “Because the land along the stream valley is owned by multiple public and private owners, the task force brought these groups together to form a common vision and action plan for keeping this stretch green and healthy."

For the past two years, Supervisor Alcorn and the task force have hosted annual cleanups to maintain the health of this stream valley.
