Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn invites community members to a town hall meeting on Thursday, June 25, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss a proposed Comprehensive Plan amendment. It would allow for the Reston Community Center to be included in the future redevelopment of the Crescent Apartments.

The meeting will take place at the Reston Community Center Lake Anne, located at 1609A Washington Plaza, Reston.

Reston Community Center representatives will be on hand to present their proposal and answer questions. The town hall offers an opportunity for residents to share their feedback directly with the center’s leadership, county officials, and Supervisor Alcorn.

“I initiated this amendment during a Board of Supervisors meeting last month, and it would increase the allowable non-residential space to 30,000 square feet on the land where the Crescent Apartments are located,” said Supervisor Alcorn.

Background on the Amendment

While the amendment proposes a maximum square footage to allow for flexibility, Alcorn said the final size of a future community center has not been predetermined. Nor have formal redevelopment plans for the Crescent Apartments been drawn up yet.

• Proposed Change: The amendment seeks to increase the allowable non-residential space on the Crescent Apartments property to 30,000 square feet to accommodate a public facility.
• Current Limits: Under the Comprehensive Plan’s existing base guidance, non-residential uses at the site are limited to 2,000 square feet now.

Last year, Alcorn introduced the motion to redevelop the nearly 60-year-old Crescent Apartments at Lake Anne. The property’s redevelopment would support the construction of new affordable housing and market-rate units, advancing the Board of Supervisors’ goal to create 10,000 new affordable housing units by 2034. Additionally, the site’s redevelopment would complement revitalization efforts for Lake Anne as envisioned by the county’s economic visioning study that concluded last year.

Currently, the Crescent provides 181 units of affordable housing, but the aging buildings require extensive renovations or replacement. Originally purchased by the Board of Supervisors in 2006, the board transferred ownership to the Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority on July 15, 2025, to facilitate the redevelopment. Housing officials are working on preparing a solicitation for the redevelopment, following community meetings last year.
