Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn released the following statement on Congressman Gerry Connolly’s announcement that he will not seek re-election:
Congressman Gerry Connolly is a champion for Fairfax County, the Commonwealth of Virginia and our nation, and he’s a tireless, courageous and outspoken advocate for our community and our values.
I’ve been honored to work alongside him since 1998 when he led the Mantua Citizens Association’s successful fight for the cleanup of a leaking oil tank farm in his neighborhood. His contributions to our community and country have only continued to grow in scope and impact since that time.
As a public servant, he sets the gold standard for constituent service, and he’s a constant presence in our community whether it’s attending a Boy Scout meeting or showing up for larger community events like MLK Day celebrations, Viva Vienna, Reston Pride, or Reston’s Founders Day both before and after Reston’s founder Robert E. Simon Jr. was still with us.
Both on the Board of Supervisors and later in Congress, he’s helped to advance so many projects and programs that benefit the Hunter Mill District. This includes Metro’s transformational Silver Line extension, the replanning of Tysons, the creation of the Connolly Cross County Trail, the actionable goal to prevent and end homelessness, the critical federal funding that saved local governments like Fairfax County and our own Metro system during the pandemic, and many other accomplishments.
I have learned so much from his example during his past 30 years in public service, and I’m proud to call him a friend.
