Fairfax County Supervisor Walter Alcorn voted to authorize a public hearing on Dec. 8 to consider boundary changes to two voting precincts in Reston, as well as create a new one.
Proposed by the Fairfax County Office of Elections, the change calls for dividing the existing Cameron Glen precinct, adjusting the boundary for Reston #1 and creating a new Reston #4 precinct.
The office wants to make these changes to rebalance the number of voters for the Cameron Glen and Reston #1 precincts to bring them in line with state requirements.
By state law, precincts shall have no more than 5,000 registered voters, and the general registrar must notify a locality’s governing body whenever the number of voters who cast ballots in a precinct during a presidential election exceeds 4,000. The law also gives local governing bodies the authority to establish by ordinance as many precincts as they deem necessary.
Currently, there are 5,484 registered voters in the Cameron Glen precinct while Reston #1 has 5,445 voters.
Proposed New Precinct and Boundary Changes
If the Board of Supervisors approve the proposal following the public hearing, the precincts will change as follows:
- Cameron Glen: This precinct would be divided roughly along New Dominion Drive and Market Street, and the areas south of these roads would become part of the new Reston #4 precinct. With this boundary adjustment, the Cameron Glen precinct would have an estimated 3,463 registered voters, but its polling location would remain unchanged at the North County Governmental Center.
- Reston #1: The proposed change would transfer a small portion of the precinct’s southwestern section to the newly established Reston #4 precinct. Specifically, the area bounded by American Dream Way to the north, the Dulles Toll Road to the south, and Reston Parkway to the east would become part of Reston #4. This change would reduce Reston #1’s registered voter count by 428. The precinct’s existing polling location at Lake Anne Elementary School would remain unchanged.
- Reston #4 (New Precinct): The proposed new precinct would include an estimated 2,449 registered voters, with the Reston Teen Center, located at 12196 Sunset Hills Road, serving as its polling place. The precinct’s boundaries would roughly encompass the southern half of the current Cameron Glen precinct, along with a small portion of the current Reston #1 precinct.

Originally, the Board of Supervisors was scheduled to consider these changes at a public hearing this past June. However, the hearing was deferred due to the special election to fill former Congressman Gerry Connolly’s seat. Because these precincts are located within the 11th Congressional District, the state-required review period for the proposed changes would not have left election officials sufficient time to print ballots for the special election.
State Certification Required Before Precinct Changes are Official
If the Board adopts an ordinance to make these precinct changes, it will be sent to the Virginia Attorney General for review before they can officially take effect. As state law dictates, the county attorneys must seek a Certification of No Objection, a review process that may take up to 60 days.
