At their June 23, 2026 meeting, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors approved the installation of "$200 Additional Fine for Speeding" signs on Crowell Road between Hunter Mill Road and Browns Mill Road.

“Community members approached me with major concerns about speeding, and I assisted them to get these signs through the county’s neighborhood traffic safety program,” said Supervisor Walter Alcorn. “More needs to be done to make Crowell Road safer — but this is a step in the right direction.”

Background and Qualifications

Fairfax County installs the additional fines for speeding signs through its Residential Traffic Administration Program, and the signs may only be installed if roads meet specific criteria:Street signs for Crowell and Brown Mill roads

  • Speeding Threshold: Engineering studies must prove that at least 15% of vehicles are traveling at least 10 mph over the posted speed limit.
  • Speed & Volume: The posted speed limit must be 35 mph or less, and the road must see a minimum volume of 600 vehicles per day.
  • Road Classification: The street must be classified as a local road, collector road, or minor arterial.

Crowell Road met all these necessary benchmarks, warranting the warning signs and increased fines.
