Cozy Up With A Good Book

Participate in the Winter Reading Challenge Dec. 1, 2022 – Jan. 31, 2023

By Renee Edwards, Program and Educational Services Director

Whether it’s emails at work or bedtime stories to our children, reading is an important skill that many of
us use every day. While this reading is undoubtedly important, there is another type of reading that we
should prioritize in our lives – recreational reading.

This winter, Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) wants to encourage everyone to remember the importance of recreational reading. According to George Mason University, benefits of recreational
reading include:

  1. Managing stress by increasing enjoyment and relaxation.
  2. Improving concentration, working memory and cognitive development.
  3. Expanding vocabulary and knowledge of the world, making readers also better writers and communicators.
  4. Developing empathy by improving understanding of ourselves and those who are different from us.

Experience these benefits for yourself and join other community members by participating in FCPL’s
Winter Reading Challenge. The theme is “Cozy Up with a Good Book,” and the focus is on recreational
reading. From Dec.1 2022 to Jan. 31, 2023, schedule time each day to read for pleasure. Participants of all
ages may log their time on Beanstack at bit.ly/fcpl-beanstack or by using a paper log available on FCPL’s website or in branches. Reach the age-appropriate goal and win great prizes!
