Library staff and volunteers remain connected with preschoolers during the pandemic.

Emphasizing the skills and concepts needed for school readiness, FCPL’s Early Literacy Services program strives to connect teachers and families to the library resources that will help prepare young children for reading and writing. Library staff and volunteers normally present early literacy storytimes directly to preschool children (ages 4-5) in child care centers, preschools, family child care homes and Head Start classrooms. Regular in-person storytimes last 20-25 minutes and include books, songs, activities and rhymes all designed to teach preschoolers early literacy skills. These programs also demonstrate early literacy strategies for teachers and providers to support their efforts in getting children ready to read and write.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Early Literacy Services maintains the relationships built with preschoolers throughout the county virtually. Library staff and volunteers present virtual storytimes to preschool children via live Zoom visits and YouTube videos lasting 10-15 minutes to be mindful of screen time.
