Kids’ Challenge: Express Yourself

Self-expression is a key component of emotional health and self-esteem. Educational experts at PBS’s The Whole Child suggest that “the ability to be creative, to create something from personal feelings and experiences, can reflect and nurture children's emotional health.”

Expression Activity BooksCreative activities help acknowledge and celebrate children's uniqueness and diversity. Jump-start your child’s self-expression with the following challenges — found in books available in our collection — and help them communicate who they are and what they enjoy. Then tag us on social media or email us at branchout@fairfaxcounty.gov to share their creations!

Suggested Challenges

  • Draw a picture of all the things that make you happy: Think about the people who make you smile and the things you love doing. (How to Be a Big Kid by DK Publishing)
  • Paint kindness rocks: Use nontoxic paint to add a light, bright message on a few large rocks. Put them somewhere unexpected so people will get a little surprise smile. (Be Kind: You Can Make the World a Happier Place! by Naomi Shulman)
  • Create an inspiration board: Cut out words and pictures from magazines or newspapers of people, places and ideas that inspire you. (100 Things to Do Before You Grow Up by Lisa Gerry)
  • Make a map of your world: Mapping the places where you spend time is a great way to express what is important to you. Include the places you go and the special routes you take to get there. Don’t forget to add a list of all of the destinations. (Art Lab for Kids: Express Yourself by Susan Schwake)
