Launchpads: Bridging the Accessibility Gap

Launchpads: Bridging the Accessibility Gap

By Tina Mraz, Early Literacy Outreach Coordinator

The Fairfax County Public Library (FCPL) is proud to now include Launchpad tablets in its collection. Each Launchpad includes educational apps, videos and games unified by one of 36 specific themes, goals or interests. These themes are geared toward children ranging in age from preschool to 8 years old and include language and literacy, music and creativity, reading, and STEAM, among others.

Launchpads are very durable and have a 7-inch high-definition touchscreen which makes it easy to use for even the smallest fingers. A speaker is also included, as is a universal headphone jack for easy listening while in quiet spaces. The tablets do not require internet to work, providing equal access to digital content for families with limited connectivity.

Every FCPL branch, excluding Access Services and the Virginia Room, has a complete collection of 36 tablets housed in the Children’s section. The tablets are available to check out for three weeks at a time and can be placed on hold at your local neighborhood library and online.
