During Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, the Fairfax County Public Library, Park Authority and other agencies partner to plant pinwheel “gardens” throughout the county. These gardens represent efforts to focus on community activities that support family and public policies that prioritize prevention to make sure that child abuse never occurs.
Introduced as the national symbol of child abuse prevention in 2008 by Prevent Child Abuse America, pinwheels symbolize a happy, healthy childhood. As they reflect light in the sun, the pinwheels are also reflective of the bright future all children deserve. These gardens are symbols of hope and reminders of the community’s commitment to prevent child abuse. You can show your support by volunteering, helping an overburdened family, advocating for changes in legislation or simply making your own pinwheel display and sharing it on social media with #PinwheelsForPrevention.
